I have been having recurring issues with software patches for Windows 7(x64) and Microsoft Office (x86). My issue is not that windows wants to install updates that are already present, but rather it says updates are installed when they are not. This is not specific to one or two, but a couple dozen patches across several machines. Typically, I will receive notification a machine has an outstanding issue that needs to be patched, and will download it from Microsoft. Generally, it is just a .dll or .exe file in the system folders that needs to be updated to specifications. I have a script which is intended to list the largest installed packages on Ubuntu. I can't remember where I got it from and I don't understand it. sed -ne '/^Package: (.*)/{s//1/;h;};/^Installed-Size: (.*)/{s//1/;G;s/n/ /;p;}' /var/lib/dpkg/status | sort -n It's reading /var/lib/dpkg/status The bottom two lines of output on my system are 340296 cuda-visual-tools-7-5 432665 texlive-latex-extra-doc If I try to apt-get remove these packages it says they're not installed. Are they actually not installed, in which case the above script is wrong, or are they installed but not removable via these names, being some sort of pseudo-package or whatever? I have google, google chrome, chromium, google earth and google picassa entries in registry. I have never installed any of these. I tried deleting them but the "TrustedInstaller" wouldn't let me. I need permission from it to delete the registry entries. How do I do that? Please refrain from giving me newbie advice like "don't mess with the registry". I was going to install Windows 10 version 1511 using the iso which i downloaded directly from the windows's website. But after the windows installer completed copying files and started the install it suddenly showed an error saying: Windows caot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070570 I also tried reinstalling several times and deleted the folder which was created during copying the setup files but it didn't worked out. What to do now ? I installed Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit on my lenovo B50-70 notebook using a Sandisk 32GB bootable USB stick. However the installation gives this message at the very end inside the command prompt screen as , "Error install failed. Press any key to exit." Which brings me to the desktop screen, and also allows me to install drivers. I have attempted to install the OS at least thrice, same message appears at the end. And the ISO which I attempted to install did work in the past both on straight install and also on VM. Actually, I want to create an image of my Linux ruing computer(bare-metal). For that, I have created a raw image of it using dd. The command I used to create the image is dd if=/dev/xvda bs=1M of=image.img. Now, I want to install bootloader or whatever is required on image.img so that a bootable USB disk can be created using it. First time installing SSD so I have bunch of questions I want to have Ubuntu on HDD and Windows 10 on SSD I only have Windows 8.1 on HDD right now. Should I install Windows 10 then migrate to SSD or migrate first then get Windows 10? Which program to use when migrating OS safely? Kickstart Query - How to install Centos/Redhat on 5th Disk? This is a kickstart question. We have DL360p server which has 6 Drives. First 4 Drives are Sata Drives and 5th and 6th are SSD Drives. Normal kickstart works fine. Bit it install OS on 1st Drive. The first drive becomes bootable drive having /boot, / and swap partitions. I want to make 5th Disk (SSD Disk) as root/boot disk. When I install a packed extension from my file system, it works for one session but then the next time I open Chrome, I get this alert: I have also thoroughly read Chrome's Alteative Extension Distribution Options and have tried to use that solution. A barracuda VPN client was installed in my windows 10 machine which was not working. I simply uninstalled the VPN and restarted my machine as required. Since the next boot my windows can't access inteet through either wifi or Etheet port. It can coect to the wifi hotspot though but always says "No inteet". Same goes for etheet port too. I am sure that my wifi is working because I'm using my mobile to ask this question here that is using the same hotspot. Please help. I just built my computer and I tried to install Xubuntu, but shortly after I start the install my monitor gives me the message out of range, and it doesn't allow me to finish installing it. I've seen a number of other posts about the same issue under slightly different circumstances or having solutions that don't work for me. I got to the installer boot menu, and I tried both the try before installing and the install options, and both start showing 4 loading dots and Xubuntu 16.04 in plain-text. bought new HP officejet 5740 e all in one. It is coected to my wireless network router, but I can't get it installed on my laptop computer. I called HP and they want to charge me $299.99 to install the new printer. They said I have junk files that are corrupt. I don't want to spend $300 on fixing this Gateway laptop, so I asked if I bought a new laptop if the files would be gone. They told me the only way to fix the problem is to have them fix the corrupt files, and buying new computer and/or router would not fix the problem. I am the 'accidental admin' for a small but growing charity. We have a Windows Server 2012 R2 ruing on a single, newish server plus 8 workstations - 6 with Windows 7 Pro and 2 with Windows 10. The single server is simply a file server & not a domain controller. Each user has a simple setup, they are users on the server and have shares that they access as mapped network drives. However with a growth in volunteers I'm being asked to setup the same user on several PCs, so the volunteers have a choice of PCs. What is needed is to upgrade the server software so that users can logon at any PC and access their shares wherever they are. To do this, I guess I need Active Directory installed? My quest...
