hyper threaded core i3 vs non-hyper threaded core i5

  • نیلوبلاگ

I have been searching around and comparing specifications to build a budget gaming PC. On the Intel site, i have been comparing CPUs and I noticed that the I3 CPUs, while only having 2 physical cores as usual, have 4 threads, meaning that they are hyper threaded. But with the I5 CPUs on the other hand, they have 4 physical cores and 4 threads, meaning that they are not hyper threaded, which is kinda weird for intel to hyper thread the I3s and I7s but not the I5s. As common knowledge, virtual cores (made by hyper threading) are of course, less powerful than physical cores. but the I3 CPUs also have significantly more clock speed, with the I3 CPUS varying between 3.3 and 3.9 GHz, and the I5 CP...

  • Firefox plugins - uMatrix vs Policeman

  • نیلوبلاگ

I've used both plugins (independently of each other) off and on the last year or so and I'm trying to understand the differences between them; specifically how "scopes" work. In Policeman, there are a number of sites under Origin. I have the impression that if site A loads site Y, site B loads site Y, and site Y loads site Z, if I configure rules for site Y about site Z they apply when sites A and B load site Y. In uMatrix the blue box specifies scope, which appears to be global, site.com, specific.site.com, and the like. This seems different from how Policeman works. My common use case example is youtube - I want to configure everything once for youtube (site Y) relative to ytimg, googlevid...

  • Cpu vs Gpu for programming laptop [on hold]

  • نیلوبلاگ

It depends. It completely depends on what you're programming. If you are programming apps or need to use programming tools that require higher resource usage then I'd go with #1 and even go up to 16 GB ram. BUT, in general, both are perfectly fine. You can even get a laptop with lower spec and it should be fine. Again, it depends. Oh, and GPU only matter if you are programming graphics related software. I mean, do you need good graphics card to develop a servlet? No. Let's block ads! بخوانید...

  • Default User's Startup folder Windows 8.1 vs Windows 10

  • نیلوبلاگ

Just noticed something as I was playing around with the Startup folder of the Default user in both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10: For some reason, on all of my installs of Windows 10, the Default user's startup folder does not exist where it should be, C:UsersDefaultAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup, whereas in Windows 8.1 it exists. I've seen on the web that it apparently was replaced with C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartUp starting in Win7, but I have this path in Win8.1 but not Win10. Win10 goes up to the Programs folder, then Startup doesn't exist. If I manually create the Startup folder in C:UsersDefaultAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgr...

  • Why is the processor limit in VMware player lower than the number of physical cores on my CPU?

  • نیلوبلاگ

My CPU has 18 cores, and, due to hyperthreading, 36 logical processors. However, VMware player's highest option in settings is a 16 processor virtual machine. Is there a reason for this? I have tried Googling, but have been able to find no answer. This is frustrating, as I would like to bring all my computational resources to bear. I am on a Windows 10 host, using VMware Workstation 12 player to virtualize Ubuntu 16.04, and I have a Xeon E5-2697 v4. Let's block ads! (Why?)...

  • Shutdown+TurnOn vs Restart - Windows 10

  • نیلوبلاگ

I'm having a strange problem with Windows 10 and remote access through a VPN (NeoRouter). I am accessing a Win10 PC remotely. If I "restart" the PC then the PC shows up in the NeoRouter VPN as being on-line and active in the VPN but I caot ping the VPN address (10.0.0.xx) and caot coect remotely. If I have someone on-site shutdown the PC normally from within Win10 and then tu on the PC 5 seconds later the PC shows up in the VPN and I can ping it and access it directly. As part of the troubleshooting I tued off hibeation, which is supposed to disable Fast Startup - that made no difference (although some people found having it enabled caused problems). If the behavior was the same regardless o...

  • How does vsync work for a window covering multiple screens with different refresh rate?

  • نیلوبلاگ

I´ve purchased a new monitor with 144Hz refresh rate. My old monitor support 60Hz. It got me thinking: How does vsync for a window work when it cover both screens? Do developers (like myself) have to make any special considerations for this to avoid performance drops or tearing? This question makes the assumption that vsync sync towards the slower monitor. This is at best plausible when the refresh rates has a decent common divider, such as 60Hz for a 60Hz and 120Hz screen. However if I set my screens´ refreshrates to 60Hz and 144Hz the common divider is 6Hz, ie not very impressive. Indeed, my faster monitor could be set to 59Hz, making the common divider 1Hz. If the sync however really is f...

  • Automatically adjust volume for audio jack vs. built in speakers?

  • نیلوبلاگ

Is there a setting to have my Windows 10 laptop automatically remember my volume settings when I plug in or unplug a device (speakers or headphones) into the 1/8" audio jack? For instance, if I plug in my headphones I would like it to revert the volume to whatever it was last time the headphones (or anything else) were plugged in; and when I unplug them I want it to switch to whatever it was before I plugged them in. I have a Surface 3 which does exactly what I want, but my new Lenovo laptop doesn't. Where can I tu this feature on? Notes: I have looked at this question, but that is 5 years old and for Windows 7 and that answer doesn't seem to be applicable to Windows 10. I am not conceed ...

  • Cloning a HD vs. Copying Files - Which is faster?

  • نیلوبلاگ

Cloning will be much. much faster. I cant say how much, as it will depend on the speed of your setup. However, it shouldnt take more than a few hours. Copying has to open a file, read it, write it, and then close it. Virus scaers will look at every file you open, as well. Other file system based hooks could slow it down, like indexing. Cloning simply reads and writes bits. Nothing will slow it down other than disk usage. Let's block ads! بخوانید...

  • Where did the Markdown Preview button go in VS Code 1.3.0?

  • نیلوبلاگ

In Visual Studio Code 1.2.0, I was loving the Markdown preview button in the top-right coer of each editor view, which allowed me to quickly create a live preview of my Markdown document (by clicking the Split View button and then the Preview button). Screenshot of Preview button, highlighted in red: img source Now in 1.3.0, the preview button is no longer there, and the release notes make no mention of its removal. The notes do mention a new Open Preview context menu (listed as a workaround below). I also found an open GitHub issue for this problem with no response (yet). The only workarounds for Preview on OS X I found were: Option 1: Right-click the file in the lefthand list panel, and c...
