Why can't I use the first or last address in a subnet?

I have network with a range 10.0.0.0/24. This means I have 10.0.0.0 to 10.0.0.255, however I caot use 10.0.0.0 or 10.0.0.255, but I can use anything between that. Why is this? The mask 255.255.255.0 implies that the last digit is the host address, so why can't i use 0 or 255? Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Too many devices on wireless network

So, there's way too many devices on my wireless network, which I normally use to play games on. Usually, there's about 3 or 4 devices coected on wifi, not counting my computer, which is on wired coection. Right now, there's a few relatives living with us, and the smartphone count has gone up to 10-12. I have a network bandwidth fluctuating between 12-17 mbps throughout the day. I'd like to limit how much of that devices other than my computer have access to. QoS is not an option. I have full access to my router. One other question, regarding wireless protocols: The network's usually setup at 802.11g, which has a bandwidth cap more than triple my peak speeds. Would setting it to 802.11b solve...

How to share a partition or folder on a wireless network?

So, I have a laptop with Windows 10 Pro, a desktop with Windows 8.1 and an old machine with Windows 7 Ultimate. They are all coected to a wireless network. I know how to share a particular folder or directory in a LAN, but am clueless how to do it in a wireless network so that any of the above machines can access a partition or a folder on a particular machine. I read something about creating a Workgroup but I couldn't quite figure it out. All I want is to make a partition on any of the systems 'common' so that it could be used as a common data dump site. Any machine having the password of the wireless coection should be able to access that partition. Any pointers in that direction? Thanks! ...

Internet Connection Sharing stopped working after Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Since updating to Windows 10 1607 (the "Aiversary Update") my shared WiFi adapter isn't shared any more. I share the WiFi coection with a Hyper-V switch so that my VMs have Inteet access via the Surface Pro 2's WiFi coection. But since the update, this only works after manually disabling and re-enabling Inteet Coection Sharing. Otherwise the inteet sharing doesn't work even though the option is set in WiFi properties. An ideas? Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Ethernet driver missing

I've recently purchased a new tower, and I've started setting it up today. I installed Windows 7 and booted it up, but I can't download/update drivers automatically because I don't have inteet and I don't have inteet because I can't get the drivers... Specs are AMD APU A4 Dual core 7300, 8gb ddr3 ram, All-in-one A88X Chipset FM2+ motherboard, and a 300Mbps USB WiFi adapter dongle. I'm also wired to my router. What should I manually download, or can I get them automatically somehow? Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Is it possible to run networking commands like nmap in WSL?

I recently got the Windows 10 aiversary update and installed bash. I tried installing nmap, but it wouldn't run. My question: Is there any way for commands like nmap to correctly run in WSL? Thanks in advance! Error I get when ruing sudo nmap -sn 192.168.1.*: route_dst_netlink: caot bind AF_NETLINK socket: Invalid argument I remember reading somewhere that WSL doesn't have support for sockets, but can use TCP. Is this possible in this case? Also, will WSL ever have support for sockets? Let's block ads! بخوانید...

NetworkManager applet does not detect networks

I am currently using Ubuntu Mate 16.04. When the system starts up the NetworkManager applet does not display any wireless networks. The only "solution" I currently know is to issue sudo iwlist scan on the command line. Afterwards NetworkManager sees the networks and I can register to my WLAN. This is quite aoying to do every time I boot the system. Is there any permanent solution for this bug? PS: I have also confirmed with rfkill that the device is not software blocked. Physical/virtual network setup

I am setting up a server and am struggling with network setup. This is what I am trying to achieve: The problems I have: 1) How to assign "Etheet" to "Pfsense" so that "Host" has no access to "Etheet"?" 2) How to make sure that "Host", "VM1" and "WiFi" are on the same network? 3) What's the best approach of creating a WiFi hotspot in the same virtual network, using "WiFi" interface? Main part of this is leaing, so for simplicity, let's say configuration is done through virt-manager. I mentioned "PFsense" only in case it puts any restrictions on the network configuration. If it doesn't, it can be anything else. Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Unable to access network drive on microsoft's cloud server

For the past couple of weeks, 2 of our users have been unable to access our clients network drive on the Microsoft azure server. This is an intermittent problem as sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. All other users can access this drive fine except those two. I have uninstalled and installed their Microsoft client for networks. I have adjusted the power management feature for Microsoft client for networks. I have adjusted their permissions to give them full control to this network drive. The only thing that works is wiping out the saved credentials under credential manager and rebooting their machines. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Thanks Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Where to find documentation about systemd-networkd status codes?

Background: My package manager seems to have managed to mess up my network daemon so it won't properly manage networks and instead exit with a failure (non-zero) status code. (The particular code is 226/NAMESPACE). Simply searching for these does not give me any helpful pages at all. Determine which program is accessing network shares?

On computer A there is a program that makes a network coection to computer B and accesses the network shares. This occurs 20+ times in less tan two seconds. The event that is fired on computer B is Event ID: 4648. This event is generated when a process attempts to log on an account by explicitly specifying that account's credentials. I think it has something to do with Adobe Creative Cloud but am unsure. How can I determine which program on computer A is making these requests to computer B? Let's block ads! بخوانید...

What are the disadvantages of having more hosts in a network than needed?

Why can't I just use a huge subnet like 10.113.0.0/16 compared to a smaller one like 10.113.0.0/24 ? I understand that if a network were to use hubs, then this would be a problem, but what about on a network using switches? I plan to have around 160 computers on the network. Virtualbox Private network with 3 VMs

I have a Vbox setup. it consists of an ubuntu machine we'll call Master, and a couple of other machines.Up untill now, I had 3 VMs. we'll call them host1 and host2. host1 is a member of a private network with ubuntu, a network named Vlan1, defined in vbox.host 2 is is a member of another private network, Vlan2, defined in Vbox. Everything was ok, the hosts would communicate through the Master with pind and nc and everything was fine and awesome. then, I've added 2 new machines. Kali linux and windows 7. Kali joined Vlan2, while Windows joined Vlan1. kali could communicate with master, same as host2. windows could communicate with Master as well. The problem is this:I've noticed sometimes I n...

What is the purpose of configuring the netmask on an ipv4 interface on a Linux machine?

I would expect that in both cases an arp request will be sent, and for the first the real host will answer and for the second the qualifying router will answer. No, the router only provides an ARP response if the ARP request is for the IP-addresses of one of the router's own interfaces. The client uses the netmask to decide if the destination IP is LAN-local or needs to be routed. If the client determines that the destination is outside the LAN, it selects an appropriate router from its routing table. Often this will be a "default gateway" configured statically or, more likely nowadays, by DHCP, at startup. The client would then broadcast an ARP request to find the MAC-address for the router...

5GHz WiFi network not detected in Windows 10 in Bootcamp

Ruing Windows 10 pro in Bootcamp it does not detect a 5GHz WiFi network, only 2.4GHz networks are found. When I boot to OSX it detects both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. Others in my office can coect to 5GHz wifi via Windows 10, although they have an Intel wireless adapter, mine is Broadcom. We have one 2.4GHz and one 5GHz wireless network in our office, but my Windows 10 only shows the 2.4GHz network in the list of available coections. There is a wall between my room and the wireless routers but even if I take my laptop to the router room it still does not pick up the 5GHz network. The network adapter obviously supports 5GHz as it works in OSX. Here are my system specs: Macbook Pro 2012 Intel i...

How can every single device on a network have a different public IP?

It is impossible for a computer to have the same public and private IP address. It is either a private IP, which is in the range 192.168.xxx.xxx, 172.16.xxx.xxx, or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx, or a public IP, which is any other address. It is possible for every computer to have a different public IP address. It simply means that whatever establishment you were at purchased the right to multiple IP addresses and their routers are configured to give one to each computer. You could probably even do this at home if you wanted to. Assuming what you said about every computer having the same public and private addresses is correct, my guess is that every computer has only a public address. All the establishmen...
