What is the servicing stack and how does it work?

In Windows, there's something called the servicing stack which seems to fulfill the role of a package manager. I don't understand it very well, only that it seems that Component-Based Servicing (CBS), Windows Installer, Windows Update, and WinSxS are part of the servicing stack or are otherwise involved in servicing. I've done lots of research and have not been able to find an easy-to-understand overview on servicing in Windows. Hence, I'm asking the following: What is servicing and what does the servicing stack do? How does the servicing stack work? What roles do CBS, Windows Installer, WinSxS, and Windows Update play? What utilities does Windows provide for interacting with the servicing s...

How does WhatsApp Web connect an Android user?

The only thing WhatsApp for Web does, is continuously query the WhatsApp on your phone and interact with it. You can type message using the website, but they are sent to your phone, and your phone then sends them to the other contact. So using WhatsApp for Web is basically the same as when you use it on your phone, except that its more convenient because you do not have to keep looking at your phone, and typing is a lot easier. That being said, WhatsApp uses the inteet to send and receive messages, not SMS text messages. How you have your phone coected to the inteet will determine how the WhatsApp messages are being sent. If your phone is coected to your local WiFi spot, and as such, you don...

How does adding an ip/web address to the hosts file block traffic?

Your operating system will first look at the hosts file before attempting to look for name resolution elsewhere. The hosts file is much quicker than querying the network so if the OS can find the answer there then it is one less query to do elsewhere. The hosts file doesn't "block" traffic, it gives an answer to a lookup to provide a quicker answer than having to send the request elsewhere that may take much longer to provide the desired answer. Similarly how an SSHD will store the most frequently accessed data on the SSD (as it is much quicker to access) than on the mechanical portion of the SSHD (which is much slower to access). How does R-Studio recover thousands of deleted/"lost" files from a SSD with no free space

I have a Samsung 850 EVO for a Windows 7 64-bit boot drive, with a single partition. There were 14,478 JPEGS (as well as thousands of other files) in approximately 180GB of free space on the SSD, totaling just over 1GB. I copied PDF files to the SSD until there was no room left on the drive. I had assumed that the files would be overwritten. However, ruing R-Studio again found the JPEGS, and it was possible to view the majority of the them in the viewer. How is it that these files persist? Let's block ads! بخوانید...

How does Thunderbird "decide" what is junk?

When you receive emails, Thunderbird has a "junk classification" process that is used to determine what is junk and what isn't. You can "teach" it by identifying emails yourself, and Thunderbird will then use these suggestions in future junk sweeps. Now there are 2 stages to this: A little flame icon will appear next to an email, suggesting that it might be junk, yet it will stay in your inbox until you identify it as junk. It will review your emails and identify what is junk; and move it to the junk folder automatically. So what factors are considered when Thunderbird decides what is/what isn't/what might be junk? How does a router monitor traffic between two devices on a switch

I recently set up a small business network, and am constantly leaing more about how networking hardware works. It is my understanding that a Layer 2 device (Dell 48 port managed switch in this case) will switch traffic based on Mac Address once it leas which devices live down each port. This way not every device in the network sees every packet (obviously broadcast and multicast can be exceptions to this). In this case, I have a Dell SonicWall router coected to the switch serving DHCP. On the SonicWall there is a packet monitor feature that lets you watch for packets originating from or going to a specific IP. If I ping one computer from another computer, both coected directly to the switch,...

Chromebook does not show the app page

A friend has two google accounts and one chromebook. Neither google account will display the app page on the chromebook. Prolly not helpful, but included is a screen capture of the message. screen capture showing the "Page Not Displayed" message Logging into any other computer using either of his two google accounts does properly display the app page. Logging out and in on the chromebook doesn't change things. Clearing the cache on the chromebook doesn't help. I've asked him to check his proxy settings, and to have a friend try yet a different google account. He's stumped, I'm stumped--are you? How does BIOS or Grub loader utilize the GPU?

How is the GPU utilized by BIOS, Grub loader or any "Pre-OS" activity? I think I have a GPU overheat issue that leads to system shutdown. The problem happens, if I stay in BIOS, Grub loader and Boot menu for more than 30 seconds. However, if the system manages to load into Linux, it can stay up for several days as long as I don't overload the GPU. Does this mean that the BIOS and other Pre-OS activities utilize the GPU more than the OS itself? If yes, I don't understand how would a blue and white screen utilize the GPU more than a fully functional desktop environment. Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Computer accessible via IP and shown in NET VIEW, doesn't automatically appear in Explorer

The LAN with the problem has about 5 Win 8.1 PCs and a unix file server. The file server also acts as browser master via samba. File sharing works fine, each machine can see the others - except one (call it \JANE, with IP = 192.168.1.5). \JANE isn't seen by any machine (including itself) in Windows explorer -> Networks. I can access it using \JANE or \192.168.1.5 and then it is listed in Explorer, but open a new explorer window and it's missing again. I can also remote desktop to it using \JANE, and ping it. It appears in the other computers when I enter net view in cmd.exe. But I can't seem to fix the inconsistency that all other machines appear in Explorer and this one doesn't. It's surely...

How Does Homebrew Add Things to My Environment?

OS X 10.11.5. I'm new to OS X and Ruby. I used homebrew to install chruby and ruby-install, then used these to install Ruby and Rails. Later I installed RubyMine. I like it, but it does not support chruby. I want to uninstall chruby and ruby-install and use RVM. On a different iMac I installed rvm and RubyMine and everything works fine. Now I want to clean up my iMac to install rvm. The main thing I don't understand is how my set output has things like these: GEM_PATH=/Users/mark/.gem/ruby/2.3.1:/Users/mark/.rubies/ruby-2.3.1/lib/ruby/gems/2.3.0 GEM_ROOT=/Users/mark/.rubies/ruby-2.3.1/lib/ruby/gems/2.3.0 ... How does Windows 7 handle leaving programs open when you log out and opening them again when you log back in?

There was a user at work whom was conceed that someone had broken into his/her computer because windows were opened on her desktop upon her arrival. However; what really happened was that windows updates had been applied to his/her machine, and he/she apparently didn't log out before hand (even though he/she thought they did). The user was ruing Office 2010; I've noticed that on my own machine when this happens Office does not re-open the documents that were open initially most times, but it will open the same number of windows that you had open upon logging off. It seems to be some sort of an attempt at making Windows 7 do what OSX does in this situation; and I can't tell if there is some s...

Hi I'm new here and was hoping someone can help me with a problem I have. Over the years I have acquired a number of ebooks (several thousand). So I have decided to only keep my mobi and Epub books. However the problem I have is that some of the ebook folder have now got only metadata files .opf and images .jpg. I caot do a general search for the .epub file extension. My laptop's model number is an ASUS X205TA-SATM0404G. It has 2 USB 2.0 ports, which I have verified by looking up the specs online and also via the software and techniques mentioned here: How to detect if a USB port is 3.0 or 2.0?
