Should i Get an Exteal SSD for my Laptop to use only specific softwares?

looking for peoples advice on my delima.

I was look to improve the running of photoshop on my laptop. Was reading that making my photoshop scratch disk on a SSD is best for performance and is better then running the scratch disk on the same drive as my main machine is, in this case it's on my c: drive.

I already have an exteal hard drive not to fill my laptop with my design files and such because they take lots of room and i have thousands.(500GB hard drive almost full.) Don't want another of those, want better performance.

Was looking of getting a 120GB exteal SSD because i don't want to change my laptop hard drive.(HP Pavillion win 10 intel i5.) My main drive c: is barely a quarter full but still photoshop is demanding and when i have to run illustrator at the same time or have multiple windows open it slows down and i even managed to make it lag.

So as i said i was looking at 120GB exteal SSD since it's mainly to use as a scratch disk for photoshop.(maybe illustrator also.)

I don't have tons of money or else i would have an gaming laptop capable of running games + photoshop at the same time while watching a movie. Anyways would it be worth it to get a 120GB exteal SSD?

I also noticed a pretty nice price difference in exteal and inteal SSD's, any way i can buy an inteal and make it into an exteal?

If anyone can answer any of this please do.

P.S: if you also could recommend the cheapest but good exteal SSD's under 100$ or close to that it would be awesome.(i'm in canada so in USD it would be around 75$ if any exist at that price.)
