Linux mint 17, most mouse inputs don't register

I have a really weird problem (thankfully not on my own computer). Since recently a computer hardly reacts to mouse clicks. Whenever the computer starts you have a single chance to open a application through menu bar.

After that the menu bar reacts to nothing and the open program sometimes only reacts to very specific input with no indication what that input will be. Often you can still use the keyboard input but right now I can only access the computer through TeamViewer and not all key combinations get sent through.

I tried the "solutions" presented here but apparently this is a different problem because metacity --replace & does nothing, nor does reinstaling inputattach.

I'm out of ideas, I would have thought it to be a hardware problem with the mouse but as I'm also having the problem over TeamViewer using own perfectly fine mouse that can't be it. My next "solution" will be an OS reinstall.
