I am running a Windows 8.1 (64 bit) system that I would like to convert into a VM to use with VirtualBox. I have used the sysinteals disk2vhd converter to create a VHD of my system, but the resulting VHD file does not work with VirtualBox.
Booting the VHD in VirtualBox (by creating a new VM and pointing VirtualBox to the VHD file) results in a "FATAL: No bootable medium found." error. Searching online revealed the problem to be that Windows 8.1 boots using (U)EFI instead of a normal BIOS. VirtualBox contains an "Enable EFI" feature, but it does not work: Enabling EFI bypasses the "No bootable medium" message, but instead causes the system to boot into an EFI shell, which lists several "BLK mappings" and references a "startup.nsh" file. There is no indication of a way to boot into Windows from the shell. I wasn't able to find any other information at this stage.
Is it at all possible to boot into a migrated Windows 8.1 install with VirtualBox? The official VirtualBox manual states that EFI support is experimental, and I cannot find a single report online of a successful migration of a physical Windows 8.1 install to a VirtualBox VHD - is full EFI support just not there?
Also, for others with the same problem: you might try the VMware Converter. It works similar to disk2vhd, except that it generates a VMware-compatible file that you could use with the VMware Player. However, I've not been able to create a VM that works well using this; e.g., it is incredibly slow, peripherals fail to be recognized, and there is no Inteet access. Of course, your mileage may vary. I would rather use VirtualBox as I am more familiar with it, but if I am forced to use VMware in the end I may retu with even more questions...
