My workplace uses an OS X server running Mavericks as a fileserver. (Not my fault; they're an all-Mac shop since long before I arrived.) I am able to mount fileshares from that server on the two Windows XP machines in the office itself, and of course from all the Macs, but I have not been able to mount them from my Windows 8.1 machine at home connected via VPN. None of my googling over the past year has managed to tu up an answer for that particular combination of circumstances, so here I am asking.
Possibly relevant technical info:
-
The office VPN is on a Watchguard firewall; I don't have the specific model/version handy but can get them if they are relevant.
-
The server is OS X Server; the relevant shares are shared with smb and afp.
-
I'm using ShrewSoft VPNClient v2.2.2 to connect to the VPN from my Windows 8.1 computer (which has all important updates installed). Once connected, I am able to access an inteal website that is only accessible from on that network, so I know I really am connected.
-
I press Windows-R, then enter the address of the server as 192.168.x.y, and momentarily I'm prompted to "Enter your credentials to connect to 192.168.x.y." The domain displayed is my home network's domain, but neither entering my useame, nor domainuseame, nor anything similar I could think of - with my correct password - results in anything other than "The useame or password is incorrect." (When I'm not on the VPN, I'm correctly told, "Windows cannot access 192.168.x.y", so again, I'm pretty confident the problem isn't with the VPN.)
- Same thing happens entering 192.168.x.y into the address bar of File Explorer.
Any ideas where the problem might be? I can upgrade the server from Mavericks to Yosemite or El Capitan if that is likely to help, but otherwise I'd rather leave well enough alone - if that's not what's broken, I don't want to break it. (Switching to a Windows or Linux server is also not an option, much as I'd like to.) I'm hoping there is a setting or a piece of software I can install (client- or server-side) that will make this work.
I would like a solution that will also work for other users potentially running Windows 7 or 10, as well - although, for all I know, they may work just fine now; I just don't have them to test with and I'm the only person at my workplace with the technical skills to even attempt this.
Thanks so much,
Brian
