I know this may be a strange question, but I figured if anywhere knew anything about straight up networking on consoles, it'd be this sub-forum. Here's my question, straight up:
- What settings can I change in my router (Nighthawk Netgear R9000 (AC3200)) to enhance my latency, download and upload speeds and everything else that would affect my online gaming performance?
As of now, getting a new router (the one I have now) did help with some latency issues I was having, and I now get around a 15-25 better ping depending on the location I'm going. HOWEVER, I've heard several things about "router settings" that can enhance things like latency, your download speed, and your upload speed in online gaming. It ranges from port forwarding, UPnP being disabled, DNS codes, the whole 9 yards. Here's some things I've dabbled in:
- I've tued on Dynamic QoS and set my PS4 to the "Highest" priority setting, and put everything else roughly around Medium/Low. I figured this would help somewhat. However, I don't -really- know how to use Dynamic QoS, so I just tued it on and then found a different setting that allowed me to put it to the highest setting for my PS4.
- I have changed my DNS servers according to using Google's Benchmark software, after running for over two hours, it came back that both of the Google DNS servers were 20-25% faster than the DNS servers being provided by my ISP. Any more information on DNS servers would be greatly appreciated.
As I know this is probably a new question for most of you, some of the things that I've heard about router settings that can sometimes enhance performance are (but not limited to):
- DNS Servers
- Setting a Static IP Address
- Using Dynamic QoS
- Tuing On/Off UPnP
Basically, I want to lower my latency to as LOW as possible on my PS4. I want to be getting a GREAT ping on any host I play on throughout the United States. I suppose a bit of background information COULD help in this situation, so I suppose I'll provide that too:
- Nighthawk Netgear R9000 Router (AC3200 Nighthawk)
- Charter Inteet (60 Download, 5 Upload, 10 ping to NEAREST server)
- PS4 is around 30 feet away from the router, and goes through the floor. I don't know what material the floor is, but yeah. I also have two hard line power adapters, but from what I've heard, changing router settings can make the latency even lower than using a power line adapter?
- Standard modem (latest updated model), also have all latest firmwares installed.
- Central United States in the mountain regions of Colorado.
Alright, that should provide a bit of background, any help would be simply wonderful, and thanks again.
