Have a sub domain process under nginx instead of apache

I have a server setup where nginx and Apache are both setup and nginx reverse proxies to Apache. I have one domain name.

Let's take as an example that my domain.com. Domain.com is processed by Apache but I want subdomain.domain.com to be processed by nginx and not have it passed to Apache. Is this possible?
