Creating path for remote server to display folders on local

I work with a 2008 Windows remote server on a Windows 7 computer and I would like to create a path where the remote folders are accessible from the local computer. For instance, I would like to be able to attach a remote file to an email. Emails are sent from Outlook on the local computer. Is this possible? Advanced sharing is fully enabled on both local and remote. I've tried to set up a VPN coection with the remote IP address\folder name however, it's not working. Any help is appreciated!
