Unable to update Windows products on more than one internet coection and more than one machine

Security Essentials - definitions, Windows 7, Office apps are all timing out or failing. This is happening at work and home more than 10 machines in different combinations. Is there an event I'm not aware of? I don't have a firewall at home besides windows default, and I added exceptions at work. A
