Dual Monitor Setup with One Dvi-D port and one VGA port

I have seen many question asking how to hook up dual monitors with only these two ports but it seems the issue in everyone's question is the VGA port. I have my primary monitor that is hooked to my computer through the VGA port and works fine. I have another monitor that also has a VGA cord so to resolve the problem i bought a Dvi-D to VGA converter that will allow the second monitor be attached to the computer. Im guessing it's not this simple since even with the converter my pc will not detect the second monitor. Every time i try to tu on the second monitor i get the "Check Video Cable" message. How can i get the dual monitors to work?
