Lenovo Laptop: The microphone fails to record background music or sound.

The microphone (of my grandfather's new Lenovo laptop in Windows 10) can record human speech, but strangely fails to record background music or sound. He called Lenovo who asserted this problem's universal existence in all their laptops' built-in microphones and the necessity of an exteal microphone.

Has anyone suffered but rectified this problem without purchasing an exteal microphone?
