Replacing old, discontinued drivers

I have a laptop mounting an ATI HD 3000 series graphic cards, and the ATI Radeon website says that those drivers have been discontinued in 2013.

The most recent upgrade of a game I'm running was me about this and tells me that my drivers are outdated and that some graphics might not show. Their website goes as far as saying that I will sometimes get black screens and that the game might and will crash due to graphical issues.

A friend of mine suggests that there might be homemade, multi-card drivers out there, making old cards still viable where the original publisher of the driver stopped caring ("programmed obsolescense" anyone?)

Where can I find such drivers, and what do I risk when installing them?

As you might imagine, the laptop is no more under any warranty.
