Seperate File Type Icons

So I want my .xml files to have their own icon on my desktop (instead of the Atom icon that it has from its default opening program). So I download "File Types Manager" from "Nirsoft" and change it to an xml icon I found online. This worked fine - but now everything that I have set to open with Atom text-editor has this icon. Do I started by giving my .mat files a different icon of their own - but then .xml and .mat (and a few others like .lua) have this icon! Is there any way I can have these separate? I am on Windows 10.
