Running a program out of tmpfs

I ask this question out of interest. I have linux installed (Debian) and I created a tmpfs partition in RAM for some temporary stuff, see here. So far so good. When I put images or text in there and open/modify it, all works very well and superfast. Yesterday I wrote a small program in C (out of fun), compiled it with gcc and tried to run it directly in my tmpfs partition. To my surprise, I get an error saying permission denied. Then I tried running my program as root, which resolves in the same error. When I copy my program to my local ext4 partition I can run it without any issues. So my question is: Why can't one run a program directly out of tmpfs or what do I have to change to achieve that?
