Get machine data on the remote server?

Can I design custom software to get data of machine usage to my server which is connected to the inteet(not LAN). The machine here is a Multi Functional Device from Canon, Xerox, etc. If yes, which platform should I use to develop it? The machine needs to connected to inteet and the software in the machine should be able to communicate the machine usage by any particular user back to the server. There will be a RFID reader on the machine which would actually allow any user to use the machine. Please provide your inputs and ask for any further clarification if needed.
