Why did a newer RAM module die and not the older one?

I found out the reason of my laptop showing 30 errors on booting: a defective ram module. In my laptop there are 2x 2GiB RAM modules: the original one bought with the laptop in 2009 (brand: S Power) and a newer one I bought in 2012 to get 4 GiB RAM (brand: transcend). The newer transcend module is the broken one.

I simply don't understand it: Why did the newer one break? The old one should have broken first...
