Oracle Open Office 3 for Mac Upgrade or transition?

I have long been using OpenOffice.org 3 for Mac created by Oracle. It seems no longer to be supported and offers no upgrade. What is the best way to move to a more mode open source word processor? OpenOffice 3 for Mac can save as .doc but not .docx and this is an inconvenience.
