Can I use a Windows 10 recovery drive with a Windows 8.1 machine?

My windows 8.1 laptop has stopped working and it has booting errors. I only have access to another windows 10 machine (upgraded from windows 8). Can I use a recovery drive of windows 10 to recover my windows 8 boot files ?? I also dont want to lose any data from my windows 8 machine
