Git am not working (am not a git command) without sudo Ubuntu 14.04

I'm trying to apply some patches using git-am but it's not working. The exact message I get is:

git: 'am' is not a git command. See 'git --help'.

Anyone have any suggestions? It used to work, and the only thing I can think of is that I installed Git Kraken a few weeks ago. If I elevate to sudo it seems to work just fine... I've tried reinstalling and updating git. By the way the rest of the git commands I've tried seem to work without using sudo.
