Issue with Windows 7 update checker

I've a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on Dell XPS l702x. The Windows license is verified. Every time I check for updates the Checking for updates bar keeps running endlessly.

So it says that I have never checked for updates, but updates were installed yesterday at 11:04. What is true that when tuing off my laptop around 199 updates were installed. So I guess the issue is with the checker itself. As it doesn't finish searching for updates.

I have followed this guide, but the problem remained.

How can I resolve such an issue?
