Our household has a modem/wireless router provided for us by our ISP, Consolidated Communications. I wasn't even aware of the fact that it had wireless capability (since we've just been using it as a modem for an actual wireless router) until relatively recently when I started picking up a "wireless" SSID that wasn't secured at all. For some reason I suspected that it was related to our network, so I started tinkering with it. I could not connect to it through http- I tried many default IP addresses, including the one that the manual said was going to work, 192.168.1.1. My mac reports that the router ip address is something that doesn't look like a local ip- 209.34.xx.xxx (I'm unsure about the security ramifications of posting an ip like that on the public intertubes, so I'll air on the safe side). A port scan reveals that port 23 is open, but ssh'in into it fails:
ssh -p 23 [email protected]
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
Anyhoo, this is irritating as clients on the "wireless" network bog down our actual networks from the router and bypass my QoS rules so I'd really like to be able to shut it down, but so far it's eluded me. Anyone have any insight?
