Why does computer software uses more and more system resources?

Hello I'm really wondering why most of windows software are using more and more system resources (mainly CPU and RAM) with some updates? For example I remember when 4GB of Ram was perfectly enough for me but after some time it became too little for me since a lot of software started using more ram than before (now I have 8GB of Ram and sometimes I feel that it soon won't be enough too because soon tablets and smartphones will have the 8GB of Ram) And sometimes I think that 4GB will be the same as 132MB of RAM (like it used to be enough some time ago) and norm will be something like 32GB of Ram and later even more...
