How to reduce file size of scans?

My HP Deskjet printer saves scanned files as HUGE .png images. I scanned one page and it saved it as a .png file over 30 MB in size. Where would I find the printer settings to change the size it saves files at?

(The default "Printer" options on the computer have no settings that relate to scanning, and there is no additional software or program that came downloaded with the printer).
