Windows 10 Stop Sharing Command

I'm a software developer who hasn't done much with networking. I'm trying to figure out networking on Windows 10.

It appears that using the Homegroup does not provide much control except over the type of files you want to share.

I see I can also go Explorer's Share tab and select how I want to share a folder. When I do that, the Stop Sharing command is enabled. But clicking this Stop Sharing command does absolutely nothing.

What on Earth is the purpose of this command? If it's unavailable (for some reason), why is it enabled? Clicking it gives me no message--not anything--and then the folder is still shared and this button is still visible and enabled. Why? And how do I stop sharing a file or folder?
