I've setup an OpenVPN server which uses tap device mode and everything works allright if I accept to work with dynamically assigned IP addresses.
When I want to assign static addresses to the clients, I put
ifconfig-push 192.168.5.4 192.168.5.1
in the Advanced Settings section of Client Specific Overrides entry of clients.
As a result, the client would be assigned with the ip of 192.168.5.4 but there is the following entry in the route table:
192.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 ......... tap0
...which ruins all settings of the vpn. If I add push "route 192.168.5.0 255.255.255.0" then there is a meaningful entry itself in the route table, but since the weird one still exists, it does not have any meaning at all.
Why is there such a route entry being inserted to the route table?
