Ubuntu Unknown Display Resolution

I recently bought an LG 24MP88 monitor, and it Ubuntu cannot detect it. Now, this being a common problem I triedd the cvt and xdr commands but on going to 1920x1280 mode, the display would only show the 1024x768 part the remaining part of 1920x1080 being out of screen. I have no discrete graphics card and am using a VGA cable. The display works perfectly in windows. Please help.
