Does Github Desktop understand when changes have been committed on command line?

I'm trialing Github desktop for our designers, so they can easily work within a repository that devs do as well.

Github desktop seemed OK, but I just made 2 commits via the cmd line rather than the interface, and the app seems to have no idea that those commits are now available to be pushed to remote.

I used the sync feature which completed and updated nothing local or remote, and there's not really many other options, so next I removed the repository and then re-dragged it back in to the app.

After re-establishing the repository, the 2 commits show up in the history and now they are syncing to remote - this is good.

The bit that's bad, is that the app had no idea about my changes via command line - am I able to get the app listening for changes to the local repo properly at all?

FWIW I doubt my designers are going to be using the cmd line, but occasionally I might need to on their behalf if there's a merge conflict, for example.

Please note also that we have a mix of OS attempting the same usage of Github desktop.

Cheers, Dave
