I have 2 locations about 1.1 miles apart. The landscape between varies in height and in particular passes very close to a 15 storey office block, but misses it (I can't yet tell if it's by more or less than the Fresnel zone but it'll be close and may force use of 5GHz rather than 2.4). The antennae in both cases would be very directional, securely fixed to the rooftops of 3 storey brick buildings and hopefully have line of sight (I'll know when I try to align them).
I'd like a good connection and bandwidth (wouldn't we all?). After reading other answers I understand that this isn't a hard distance for a cantenna, wokfi, yagi, or converted satellite dish, that it may be worth using a usb pickup and repurposed parabolic dish to avoid issues with the signal from antennae to amplifier and avoid the need for exact yagi layout, and that it's probably better to use very directional and sensitive antennae rather than high power transmission. I don't mind buying good quality equipment if I can't reasonably hack together some part of what I need.
I've never set up anything like this, so the questions that comes to mind and "block" me trying this out, are very basic ones - 1) narrowing down the choices/pros/cons on the antenna system used, and 2) the equipment needed and method to follow, to align them.
I'm not specifically after specific brands and products, more the specs and types of equipment and techniques I should be using to help me narrow these down and get an idea what is appropriate.
