So this all started when a few days ago I got my oculus rift and as I was plugging the USBs into the back of my computer my computer just shuts off, couldn't tu it on anymore, pressing power button only spinned the psu fan a little bit, nothing powers on though. The day after I tried to power it on again, it worked but my motherboard was smoking on a little black chip near the ram slots, I tued it on a few more times to see if it would just disappear on its own, it stopped smoking but my computer stopped booting, when it smoked the first time I remember I could see my boot screen on my monitor, but after I tued it on and off a couple of times to see if it would keep smoking, it stopped smoking but there was no more display, no signal to monitor. I could still power on my computer, all the fans spin but it just doesn't go anywhere, no LEDs on mobo either.
Because of this problem I went out to get a new motherboard and a new CPU to be compatible, I put everything in my case, I connected dvi to my gpu and power to my psu, that's it, I power on my system, fans spin and no display along with no LEDs on the mobo just like my broke motherboard. I did the exact same thing again with a new motherboard, thinking maybe I got a DOA mobo, I got the same results with my 2nd new mobo.
At this point I have no idea what's causing the problem, I don't think its very likely that I managed to broke 2 motherboards the exact same way due to incompetence, I never got to see either of these motherboards light up, I don't even know if they have LEDs. (it's the asrock z97 anniversary and msi h81m-p33, in case anyone knows if they have LEDs)
To see if my psu was the culprit I first did the paperclip test, it worked. I then hooked up my PSU, GPU and 1 stick of ram along with an old CPU on a old motherboard just for testing on a piece of cardboard, as soon as I tued the power on on the PSU, the lights on the mobo lit up. I started the testing build with a screw driver, and the lights stayed on while the fans of everything connected were spinning, I didn't have a monitor connected but I'm guessing this means that it was successful with booting, as my previous problems weren't there.
So I have a question, do all motherboards have an LED? if so, doesn't my test rig rule out my gpu, ram, and psu from what's causing my motherboards to fail? my CPU is also brand new and even if it wasn't I doubt a CPU could break a motherboard like this instantly upon booting. I read online that its pretty much either the PSU or mobo in situations like this.
I'm completely stumped at this point, I want to use my computer but I don't know if it's the best idea to just go out and buy a 3rd mobo after all this. I would really appreciate it if you guys could share some insight on what you think is causing my problem, sorry for such a long post, I just thought all the details might be necessary.
