Cutting strings in GRUB2 shell

Is it possible to cut strings in GRUB2's shell like I can in bash? Let's say I have a variable str that is set to This is a test.. How can I extract a substring from it? Things like ${str:2} don't work even though GRUB2 is supposed to have sh-like environment.
