Access files from a backup vbox file

Using Windows 10, I attempted to update my Ubuntu 14.04 virtual machine over ssh (using Vagrant) and the update failed. After that, I could not log back into the virtual machine, so I pulled from a backup, unfortunately, the backup doesn't have some of the files I was working on. I still have the original vbox, but it won't boot. Is there any way to access the files in the vbox so I can pull those out and move them to the new virtual machine?
