How can I stop 1KB ~$files from proliferating my Windows Explorer

How can I stop 1KB ~$files from proliferating my Windows Explorer. Every day, as I use my computer, ~$files that are only 1KB in size keep popping up in my MS Word directory folders. I have never had this happen before. It just started a week ago and I have no idea what is causing it. They appear to be remnants of temporary files. I'd appreciate any advice on how to correct this problem. I'm using the Windows 10 OS and MS Office 2013. Thanks.
