I have two Windows 10 OSs installed in two partitions of the same HDD. I wanted to encrypt both with USB and I ran into trouble. I am hoping I can still recover information on the partition that does not boot since the encryption process never started. The partition shows as locked though.
I got into trouble by following these steps:
- I successfully encrypted partition 1 (main) with BitLocker using USB as key.
- As BitLocker did not allow USB key as option from Windows in partition 1, I restarted and booted OS from partition 2.
- From Windows in partition 2, enabled BitLocker with USB as key. I got prompted to restart in order to begin encryption, restarted right away.
- I can boot fine Windows on partition 1 but when I choose partition 2, I get a blue screen with the error "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME". There is no error code. I do not get prompted for recovery options.
What I have tried so far:
- Boot from partition 2 without USB plugged in, enter recovery key information. Key does not match.
- Boot from partition 1, open file explorer, right click on partition 2 -> Unlock drive. Enter recovery key, key does not match drive. (I also clicked on load from USB with the recovery key that was saved to the USB, same result)
I already verified Key ID matches the recovery key and that the recovery key is correct as it was saved to my Microsoft account and also a backup recovery was saved to the USB.
I am thinking that since the encryption process did not even begin, there should be a way to get the data on the drive. I do not mind much for booting into Windows in partition 2, although it would be nice, just the data.
Appreciate the help! :)
