Android Studio 2.1 no redeployment with asset change

I use Android Studio 2.1 (my project is not Gradle-based, so no Instant Run is available).

I try various asset files (also changing the source code) but when I hit Run, I always get these lines:

No local changes, not deploying APK
$ adb shell am start -n "com.mycompany.myapp/com.mycompany.myapp.AndroidLauncher" -a android.intent.action.MAIN -c android.intent.category.LAUNCHER
Client not ready yet..Waiting for process to come online
Connected to process 13504 on device XYZ

So I have to hit Rebuild and Run again - which is very tiresome.

Why is asset change not considered as local change?
