Zero length files moved from SD Card to PC

I moved some files from my phone's SD Card to my PC. This is something have done loads of times before, but this was the first time since my phone has been upgraded to Android 6. The files which I cut from my phone and pasted into a Windows folder seemed to move OK, but they are all zero bytes in size. Because I cut them they have disappeared from the SD Card. I would like to get them back. I have tried Dr Fone to restore the files but it doesn't work because my phone is not rooted. My phone is an Honor 5 and it looks quite complicated to root. What options do I have to get them back? Is it worth getting a USB reader for an SD card then I wouldn't have to worry about rooting? Are there any other choices?
