Linux: Visualize Ping by changing Screen color

I'm looking for away to easily show (so no need to read any text) students if a repeating ping is successful or not. Years ago I had a tool on Windows changing its window color from red to green when pings where successful (and back to red) if pings failed. Beyond the necessity that it should run under Ubuntu (either shell or GUI) I have no additional requirements.
