I would like to use NotePad++ Find and Replace with RegEx to essentially compress data in a text file. I have data which contains repeated adjacent words such as:

[dog][cat][cat][dog][cat]

I would like to change this to something like

[dog][cat (2)][dog][cat]

I know how to capture multiple strings like this and replace them with a single instance:

Find: ([w+])(?:1)+

Replace: ${1}

Is there some way to insert the count of these instances in the replace string?
