Recover previous version of a file

I'm in trouble.

I deleted the contents of a file. The file is still there, but it's empty. It was a shell script of about 3000 lines.

Unfortunately, file was in an exteal hdd, and time machine was not set to backup exteal hdd.

Any alteative to get this file contents back? Thanks!
