Remote edits over NAS

I regularly access my files stored on Samba server (ruing on Linux) by mapping it as network drive on Windows 8 laptop. My questions are: -

1. If I open a remote spreadsheet directly from mapped drive then does Windows laptop temporarily cache it on the local HDD while I edit the spreadsheet?
2. Does the behavior change if it is a PDF (or an image document) instead of spreadsheet?
3. Under what circumstances does the caching actually occur(if at all) and how can I stop the caching?

I understand the document might be cached in memory - and that is okay. The question specifically relates to HDD caching.

Please note that I open the documents directly from the mapped drive. I do not copy them to my C: before opening them.
