How to check (in advance) if a W7 product key will activate W10

Last autumn I tried to upgrade a W7 laptop to W10. All installed OK, but wouldn't activate - I think the reason was I had bought it from work and it was ruing a volume licensing key.

Anyway, had to completely reload the laptop from a W7 partition backup to get it back to where it was. Tedious.

In the end I bought a new retail license to get the laptop upgraded, but now I now have an old W7 desktop I want to do the same thing with, but again, do not know the history of the product key.

Is there any way I can find out in advance of the upgrade if the W7 product key is likely to allow W10 to activate?
