Basically what I'm trying to do is figure out a way to somehow reduce the sound output level of my system to a certain level (say half volume) and bind that to a keyboard shortcut. Ideally, the volume would only be reduced while the key(s) were being held down, but I'd be happy with a reduce key and a "back to 100" key. In audio engineer terms, I'm essentially trying to create a software dim button.

A little back story, I'm a professional video editor ruing Windows who works with a lot of sound as well. One of the issues I run into is major variances in sound levels as I'm going through footage, so I'd love a way to drop down the volume when I see a loud part coming up on the waveform and bring it back up to normal afterwards. I've been simply reaching for the volume knob on my audio interface, but that's becoming increasingly cumbersome and impossible to get my exact level back afterwards. I use a pad of programmable keys (Razer Tartarus) in conjunction with Adobe Premiere, so ideally I could create a macro and use one of the keys on that.

Thanks in advance for any help the SuperUser community can provide!
