Update notifications for opensource software?

I'm using Ubuntu as my main desktop OS at the moment.
Unfortunately I sometimes need newer version of libraries or applications than available in the repositories via apt-get.
Therefor I compile them myself e.g. from their Github repositories.
The problem is that sometimes I want to keep these libraries and applications at their latest versions.
I would like to know if there is an easy solution to manage this, especially if you have many repositories to keep track of?
