Can you close the smtp port and stil sending emails?

Is an open SMTP port necessary when sending Mails from a SMTP server. In a client server architecture this would not be needed, because the SMTP would server act as a client coecting to other SMTP servers to send a mail. But maybe the protocol requires a coection from outside too?
