I'm using a Windows 8.1 system via an account with administrator privileges that has already been set up for me---let's say the useame is jez. To my surprise, Windows Explorer shows that C:Users does not contain a jez directory, only Public and UpdatusUser (whatever that is). To my further surprise, a command prompt shows that %USERPROFILE% appears to be set to C:Usersjez_ (note the trailing underscore). Tab-completion from the command prompt also reveals that there are other hidden directories inside C:Users (specifically All Users, Default, and Default User) What is going on here? We have two screen lock policies in the domain controllers GPO editor. 1 applies to 'authenticated users' so it will affect all users on the domain, as intended. It is not enforced. It sets the screen lock to 15 minutes. All working fine. 2 applies to specific users, i'e the sales team, via security filtering. They want a longer time before the screen locks. So the second policy sets the lock to 30 minutes. This is enforced, so it will override policy 1 for the users in security filtering. Does anybody know some kind of watchdog tool that can be mostly transparently used to call a buggy tool and that monitors and restarts the tool if required, but also redirects the command line and also in case of success the output streams of the called program. Explanation: I have a tool that is quite buggy. sometimes it just hangs, sometime it just crashes. Unfortunately there is atm no time to fix that unreproducible (and difficult to track down) bugged behavior. Most time it runs quite fine - but it is part of a long ruing optimization process chain and it is used over and over again. I only use the Photos app when I double-click local image files (it's the default). How is this my #1 bandwidth user in the last 30 days as per the App History tab on the Task Manager. That puts it above things like OneNote, which I use heavily and syncs to the cloud with every change. What exactly is it using network bandwidth for when I'm only using it with local files? As an aside, why is Chrome not listed in here? I see Microsoft Edge, which I use rarely to test site compatibility. Chrome is my main browser and does not show any usage information. Usually, right clicking on a file, selecting "Open with" followed by "Choose another app..." brings up the following menu which also includes installed apps, so that one may be set as the default application for the file type: However, when trying to open a file using a Windows 10 Store app and the above method, the app is not listed. I can open the app, then open the file from within it, however this is less convenient. I've been having all sorts of problems with the start menu on my Windows 10 Pro 64 system. A week or so ago my start menu stopped launching. I followed all the guides to fix that. In the end I created a new profile on the machine and migrated my data and settings. Under my new profile I caot launch items from search results. "Quickbooks" displays the quickbooks app, when I left click it nothing happens. Only way to launch is right click "run as administrator" or right click "open location" and run the shortcut. I've just started a reindex of the search, wondered if the search results were pointed at shortcuts which no longer worked due to profile migration. Any other thoughts? Let's block ad...

Recently my Mid-2011 iMac (default specs except 2x 4GB RAM boards were added years ago, ruing latest OS X and most recently updated days ago) has been locking up during use - a single random app would get a beach-ball - sometimes it would finally clear, and sometimes the system would lock-up hard - the dock, the hard drive icons, some finder toolbar icons, etc would vanish, the mouse wouldn't move and keyboard won't work so I have no choice but a hard reboot. iTunes would halt playback as if there was an issue accessing the disk or ram. My company uses Google Apps for which I am a super admin. I personally use the web interface for email and calendar but have the accounts setup on my macbook and iphone so I can use Mail.app or Calendar.app. My colleagues mostly use Apple's Calendar on OSX and iPhone. Calendar.app on my laptop keeps notifying me when one of my colleagues has an invite in their email. It is really irritating and confusing to receive their invites.
