Ubuntu/Linux modifying ip->ttl value on the keel

I am trying to change the ip->ttl value for certain packets. First of all, I tried to change the ip->ttl value in the ip_output.c in the keel. What I did is changing the following command: iph->ttl = 60; However, when I ping to local host or a neighbor device the displayed ttl value still ttl=64. I tried to use iperf in local host and I got the same ttl value. Please notice, I rebuild the keel after the modification to activate them. May you please help me in what I miss? Best regards, Amer
